The concept for 1UglyShirt.com evolved from a personal study of art which over the years has rendered various looks at earth and culture. Originally, I simply wanted to have a complete understanding of what is "beautiful". I have found that "ugly" art to be more FUN and CHALLENGING. For more than 25 years, I use this quest as an integral part of being an artist and an art educator.

As a teacher of art, on the 1st day of any class I suggest that a limited knowledge of ugly will result in a limited understanding of beauty. Pointing out that appreciating the "uglyful" simply asks us to accept that beauty is in a constant flux of cultural preferences, perceptions and societal changes. Reminding that any definition of beauty is as slippery as its voices - generally not to be trusted by anyone willing and able to walk their own walk. Showing up each day in an UGLY SHIRT was my way of making the quest fresh and entertaining.

Over the years, this conversation has challenged a lot of young innocent minds, and it continues to be a conversation I use as litmus test when meeting new people. The responses to my comment, "NOW, THAT'S AN UGLY SHIRT," either take the form of an appreciation for its irony or a dignified and subdued "Oh?!".

Style is most commonly declared so by the most paid. Generally, we blindly trust someone else's opinion or marketing instead of trusting our INDIVIDUAL STYLISTIC INSTINCTS.
